With a long history of its establishment, Akaki Tsereteli State University is one of the leading universities to study medicine in Georgia. The university was originally established based on Tbilisi State University under the guidance of Georgian historian Ivane Javakhishvili in 1918. However, after Georgia fell under Soviet rule, the university was abolished in July 1930 and was later re-established into four independent institutions.
Hence, Akaki Tsereteli State University was established in 1990 and is named after Georgian poet and national liberation movement figure Akaki Tsereteli. This university was originally established in July in Tbilisi but is now located in Kutaisi.
