Established in 1527 by Philip I, Landgrave of Hesse, the Philipps University of Marburg is one of Germany's oldest universities that is still operating now. Philip I was one of the most important of the early Protestant rulers in Germany and hence, the university also functioned as a Protestant university for centuries.
However, now it is a public university of the state of Hesse, without any religious affiliation, housing students across the globe and all religions. Backed by 23,500 students and 7,500 employees, the Philipps University of Marburg has the highest percentage of international students in Hesse with a massive 14%.
The university is located in the city of Marburg with its buildings dotted in or around the town centre.
